Personal Meaning in Music for Good Friday

When we listen to or sing any kind of music, we can be moved in many ways.  Consciously or unconsciously, we react to the music and/or words from our own experience, from our current mood, from our hopes and expectations.  On Good Friday evening, the Festival Choir is presenting a concert of music from old to new which reflect on death and the life beyond - with, of course, specific reference to the crucifixion of Jesus.  This year, one of the pieces holds special significance for me.

Music in services

Music in worship helps us all learn, pray, rejoice, mourn.  In hymns and responses, the congregation joins as the body of Christ in the liturgy - the peoples' work.

When listening to an anthem or to a piece of instrumental music, the words and music and the music itself often lead us closer to God.  We all love familiar hymns and anthems.  We are challenged by the new - both in ideas and in sounds.
