Metropolitan United Church is in the heart of Toronto, serving a congregation drawn from across the City and its surrounding communities. We provide pastoral care to almost 700 families, with about 300 people attending our 11 a.m. Sunday morning service.
People come a long way not just because our church is large and historic, but because it is modern in outlook.
We minister to several congregations, including the Sunday morning one, and the weekday congregation found in our Community Services programs.
Our congregation is bright, lively, city-affirming, well-read, well-travelled, musical, theatrical, full of quick wit and good humour.
Metropolitan is progressive too. We play an important role in Toronto's Gay and Lesbian community, centred just to the north of us on Church Street. The congregation of Metropolitan United Church voted to be recognized as Affirming (Welcoming people of all genders and sexual orientations to worship and minister among us.)
Inclusion and Respect for Diversity
As part of the United Church of Canada, we value diversity. We greet you, regardless of age, race, class, gender, orientation, or physical or mental ability. We honour the various religious practices of all people of goodwill. The Sacred Spirit works through a variety of expressions.
For Christians, Jesus is the profound drama of God. Our understanding of the Holy is only limited by our imagination. God is always greater, and moves as a mysterious Spirit who marks no distinction at the doorways of Christian chapel; Buddhist, Hindu, or Sikh temple; Aboriginal sweat lodge, Muslim mosque, Jewish synagogue, or any other portal where truth is sought and love is shared.
We work together with other churches, and among people of other religions, in Canada and throughout the world, in matters of justice, peace, and human dignity.
Today, difference is everywhere. It is a great cause for celebration.
