Our Statement of Values

Metropolitan took itself through a visioning exercise in 2000, prior to a search for a new Minister to take charge of Congregational Life. What follows here is the statement of vision and values that we came up with at that time.

As we, the congregation of Metropolitan United Church, members of the United Church of Canada, enter the third millennium since the birth of Jesus Christ, we strive to be faithful to his gift to us and his example for us by realizing our vision for Metropolitan which:

  • Builds on the quality, intelligence, creativity, and rich ritual of our worship;
  • Strengthens the compassion, commitment and effectiveness of our social programs through education and action;
  • Feeds the spiritual hunger of the congregation and the various communities in and around us;
  • Opens its arms and welcomes all who seek to be part of our life and work;
  • Reaches out to the surrounding community through a strong ministry of music, preaching and social action;
  • Attracts and nurtures children, young adults and extended families to play an important role in our congregational life;
  • Plans for the future and exercises wise stewardship of the resources we hold in trust, as those resources have been so wisely held in trust for us; and
  • Lives the United Church Creed and leads by example, as the Church struggles to define its role in a changing world.

At Metropolitan, people come together to find the assurance of God's great gifts:

  • A sense of peace in the heart of the city,
  • A sense of joy in the beauty of word and song,
  • A sense of courage in the enduring dignity of the sanctuary,
  • A sense of purpose in the sharing of one's self,
  • A sense of hope in the changing seasons of our connected lives.

May you find in this community
one living spirit of Love,
the Creator and Sustainer of us all.
