Carol Matthews

Carol Matthews is the leader of the Metropolitan Sparklers, a music education group for children aged 4-6 that meets every Sunday. Carol comes to Toronto via New York and the western US. She has a Ph.D. in music composition from City University of New York, and has taught at University of Oregon, Hunter College in New York, the University of Wisconsin Centre at Wausau, and Boise State University in Idaho.

In addition to teaching at the University level she has also taught music at the secondary, primary and pre-primary levels and was fortunate to become part of a Reggio Emilia program at a private school for the arts in Idaho. There she developed a project based approach to music education and has published her research on the negotiated music classroom. She has also composed for every kind of ensemble from solo instrument to symphony orchestra. Her primary instrument is voice and she has been a choral singer and soloist since early childhood. She currently is Visiting Scholar with the Music Education Division at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto.
