Support for Aging Parents

Support Group for Adult Children of Aging Parents

The Support Group for Adult Children of Aging Parents is a network of congregation members at Metropolitan United Church who are, or have recently been, engaged in caring for elderly parents. We seek to learn from each other and to support each other as members of a faith community who are facing a common set of challenges, including:

  • Finding suitable assisted care;
  • Dealing compassionately with a parent's grief over, and resistance to, changed circumstances;
  • Adapting to a new parent-child relationship as the parent grows more dependent;
  • Balancing parental care with child care and a busy work life;
  • Arranging work leave in emergencies;
  • Dismantling the parental home;
  • Dealing with our own issues of burnout, frustration and worry;
  • Sharing the burden among siblings;
  • Dealing with conflict among siblings.

We don't meet regularly; we're all too busy! But we will be trying to keep in touch, and to use the Met Website as a means of pooling information that would be of use to us all. Keep an eye on this page for future developments.
