Sermon Notes

For many modern Christians, Jesus’ call for the disciples to be “fishers of people” is a difficult notion to untangle from the Church’s role in colonialism. In Rev. Meyers’ sermon “The Good Ship,” we will explore how Christ’s call is fundamentally one of resistance to spiritual arrogance and all forms of subjugation.

The organ prelude this week includes enduring spirituals, such as Deep River (arr. Billingham) and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot (arr. Utterback). Benjamin Stein leads Great Heart and the Metropolitan lead singers in the gospel-influenced anthem People, Get Ready, and collaborates with guest singer Laurel Tubman on a new song paying tribute to the 1867 New Orleans streetcar protests, I Stood Tall.
