As we approach Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, we will recognize the legacy of the residential school system in our service this week. The use of an orange shirt as a symbol for this day was inspired by the accounts of Phyllis Jack Webstad, whose personal clothing—including a new orange shirt—was taken from her during her first day of residential schooling, and never returned. As our country and our church continues the journey towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, you are invited to wear something orange on Sunday.
Many of Jesus' parables teach us about the character of God, or the kingdom of God. This week's parable, the story of Lazarus and the Rich Man, teaches us something about ourselves. It teaches us how to make a difference, in this world God loves so much.
